Mama Money is a growth-stage fintech startup dedicated to helping migrant workers in South Africa send money to their home countries. To support continued growth, the business places a strong emphasis on customer acquisition and retention strategies, while leveraging its agent network to build a distinctive and difficult-to-replicate offering. The Head of Marketing and Brand will oversee the commercial aspects of the money transfer business in South Africa, with a particular focus on direct marketing and digital channels. This role will play a key part in driving customer growth and will form part of the senior management team, reporting directly to one of the company’s co-founders.
What you'll do
Crayon is proud to be partnering with Mama Money to find a seasoned leader who will drive the marketing and brand function with a commercial lens. The successful candidate will:
- Lead and evolve Mama Money’s marketing and brand channels across growth, acquisition, retention, loyalty, and commercial performance.
- Develop and execute strategies that drive customer acquisition and retention to stimulate activity and grow transaction volumes.
- Manage and inspire a multidisciplinary marketing and design team (5+ members), fostering strong collaboration and high performance.
- Introduce robust performance metrics and establish clear success measures, enhancing commercial and operational efficiency through improved processes, systems, and organisational structures.
- Define and drive the product vision for the agent network, ensuring Mama Money’s market proposition remains industry-leading.
- Act as an internal advocate for product enhancements that support both customer experience and operational scalability aligned with growth strategies.
- Contribute meaningfully to digital acquisition and engagement efforts, collaborating closely with the digital team on product and growth initiatives.
- Own customer retention and reactivation across multiple channels, ensuring consistent engagement and satisfaction.
- Identify and propose new growth opportunities, including untapped initiatives, channel innovations, and strategic partnerships.
- Serve as a cultural ambassador for Mama Money’s values, particularly within the agent network.

In the first 90 days, this individual will:
- Deeply immerse themselves in Mama Money’s operations, especially understanding the agent network, customer base, and core product.
- Deliver an initial strategy focused on accelerating acquisition and retention while streamlining internal processes.
- Build a "success wishlist" outlining key needs, tools, or hires to unlock future growth.
- Take the reins of the commercial team and begin identifying areas for enhancement.
- Fully absorb the company's mission, values, and strategic ambitions to guide their leadership impact.

- At least 5+ years of experience in a leadership or head-of-department capacity
- You are currently leading and growing the commercial side of a retail or financial services business or have experience doing so in the past
- You understand physical and online distribution, acquisition strategies, churn and retention strategies and metrics
- You have exceptional communication skills, managerial skills and a very strong commercial mindset
- You’re obsessed with growth and performance, including operational efficiency
- You’re kind, you believe in collaboration and respect and you’re keen on joining something bigger than you to make it even bigger
- You have a strong interest in social impact and how to uplift people
- Previous experience working in the fintech space or at a rapidly scaling start-up
What you'll need
