Regional Defensive Driving Instructor

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Defensive Driving Instructor to conduct defensive driving courses and practical in-service assessments for motor vehicle drivers of all experience levels regionally. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in defensive driving techniques, accident prevention strategies, and traffic safety regulations. The position will be based at the Florida Training College.

Qualifications, Experience and other competencies required:

  • Grade 12 school qualification or equivalent.
  • Occupationally post school certification or relevant qualification in defensive driving instruction.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a defensive driving instructor or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of defensive driving techniques, accident prevention strategies, and traffic safety regulations.
  • Train the trainer / Facilitator and or Assessor qualification.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students of all ages and skill levels.
  • Patient, supportive, and encouraging attitude towards students.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Above average computer skills, drafting of spreadsheets and power point presentations
  • Clear criminal record.
  • Ability to travel on a regional basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct defensive driving courses in a classroom and/or practical setting.
  • Instruct employees on defensive driving techniques, accident prevention opportunities, hazard recognition, and accident-avoidance strategies.
  • Transfer techniques on how to react in emergency situations and handle adverse weather, road and other climatic conditions.
  • Provide individualized feedback and guidance to improve their driving skills.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all participants.
  • Keep up to date with vehicle safety features and technological advancements in vehicle safety.
  • Maintain accurate records of participant attendance and progress.
  • Collaborate with other training individuals, operational staff and relevant role players instructors and staff to improve course curriculum and delivery.
  • Stay current on Road Traffic Act, traffic laws, regulations, and best practices in defensive driving.
  • Conduct random evaluations within the region during the operational service.
  • Attend to morning and evening parades and have a general discussion on awareness / toolbox talks with the staff on random intervals across the region of responsibility.
  • Physical driving and evaluation of staff on the road.
  • Ensure adequate record keeping of all training interventions, evaluations and progress.
  • Compile adequate assessment records and feedback reports on interventions conducted.
  • Identify concerns and build awareness material for staff to take cognisance of behavioral changes.
  • Conduct accident reviews with branches on all accidents that occurred and evaluate corrective measures.
  • Evaluate and develop safe driving awareness campaigns.
  • Compile weekly reports on progress, trends and planning related to vehicle accidents, training and compliance trends.
