The Department - Description of the Department
The Department is situated within the Faculty of Commerce, primarily servicing students reading for the BBusSc, BCom, and BSc (InfSys) degrees. The Department was first established at Rhodes University in 1980 as a sub-department of the Department of Business Administration (now Management). Today, it is a flourishing, independent Department with a full undergraduate and post-graduate program. Information Systems is a two-year major that attracts numerous students intent on pursuing careers in either Information Systems or Accounting. All students are required to have completed a first-year semester course in computing offered by the Department of Computer Science before registering for Information Systems. The Department offers courses at the second, third, and fourth (honors) year levels, as well as Masters and PhD degrees by thesis.
Main Objectives All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research) and community engagement, recognising that there are differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.
The Requirements
A Master’s Degree in Information Systems or equivalent. Membership of a professional board (e.g., IIBA, IITPSA, etc.) would be an advantage.
- Tutoring or facilitation experience required. Some teaching experience would be an advantage.
- Ability to teach in the following disciplinary areas: Project Management and System Analysis. The ability to teach databases, data analytics, digital transformation, accounting information systems security and control, and IT ethics will be an advantage.
- Some research supervision or research outputs would be an advantage.
- Some administrative experience, albeit in informal contexts. (e.g., student or sports clubs, work experiences)

Remuneration per annum (Grade L): Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R633,149.00 Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R826, 949.00 All applications will be treated in strict confidence. This post is advertised as a permanent post, but the University may opt to appoint on a fixed-term contract of not less than three years .
