Geotechnical and Spatial Information Specialist (Grade 12)
Geography Department
The Geography department invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
Main Objectives
The purpose of the job is to support teaching, learning, research and community engagement for the broader university community and the public by providing:
- Support for the Geography Department (staff and students) with spatial technologies – plus Rhodes;
- Support for the Geography Department in practical teaching, specifically in GIS, Remote Sensing and other Spatial Technologies.
- Maintain the Geography Department's digital maps and images facility;
- Maintain and manage the Geography Department's map libraries;
- Manage Rhodes University GIS software and the licensing thereof;
- Maintain the Rhodes University Weather Station and associated data;
- Maintain and manage software required for electronic equipment/apparatus;
- Maintain the Geography Department's Web Page and displays;
- Manage and maintain the Geography Department GIS Laboratory;
- Provide support to Rhodes University and the general public with maps and electronic spatial resources; and
- Supervision of the Senior Technical Officer and Senior Laboratory Assistant.
- The position also monitors and co-ordinates tasks with academic and other technical staff.
The Requirements
A Bachelors degree in one of Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Geomatics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent (NQF level 7 - 3 years of study) PLUS at least three years' relevant experience where such experience includes:
- Use of GIS and Remote Sensing Software ( g. ArcGIS, QGIS, Agisoft). Candidates without GIS and Remote Sensing Software experience may be considered, provided that they are willing to complete the GOG302 course and specific ESRI online courses.
- Providing software support. Experience in diagnosing hardware problems would be an advantage.
- Previous hardware and networking experience would be an advantage.
- Experience in working with SA topographical maps would be a distinct advantage.
- At least six (6) months' previous supervision experience and/or be in possession of an RU Supervision certificate.
- Previous administrative experience and an understanding of financial concepts .

Remuneration per annum (Grade 12):
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R464,758.00
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R617,693.00
