Job Title: Head of Social
Location: Durban, South Africa
Salary: R50 000.00 per month
Reports to: Chief Growth Officer & Creative Director


The Head of Social is responsible for developing and executing the social media strategy across all platforms for two high-profile sports brands. This individual will drive engagement, fanbase growth, and brand relevance by delivering outstanding content that connects with fans and reflects the culture of the sport.
This role is a key part of the internal agency and collaborates closely with creative, digital, and commercial teams to align social efforts with brand strategy. A central responsibility is leading a ‘Players First’ approach—elevating player profiles and using their stories to enhance brand reach.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and own the social media strategy across platforms including Instagram, TikTok, X/Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Threads, and LinkedIn.
  • Set channel-specific growth and engagement targets.
  • Translate business objectives into actionable social media plans and structured content calendars.
  • Balance storytelling, live coverage, commercial content, and fan-first activations.
  • Build and implement a content framework to develop player-driven storytelling.
  • Work directly with players to generate authentic and engaging content.
  • Collaborate with creative teams to spotlight marquee and emerging athletes.
  • Track and grow players' digital reach as part of brand expansion goals.
  • Oversee daily publishing schedules and creative output.
  • Drive innovation in content formats tailored to each platform.
  • Ensure brand tone and fan resonance across all posts.
  • Support integrated campaigns across digital, marketing, and commercial units.
  • Foster strong digital fan communities through responsive, human content.
  • Engage with trends and cultural moments to keep content fresh and relevant.
  • Amplify community-led and user-generated content.
  • Monitor and report on performance metrics—engagement, reach, watch time, shares, and growth.
  • Provide data-driven insights to optimize strategies and inform decision-making.
  • Communicate performance updates to internal stakeholders regularly.
  • Lead and mentor the social team—developing skills across creative, publishing, and analytics.
  • Collaborate with marketing, content, creative, and commercial units to align priorities.
  • Represent social in planning meetings, pitches, and strategy sessions.
  • Contribute to brand campaigns and partnership activations from a social-first perspective.

Requirements

  • Diploma/Degree in Marketing, Communications, Media, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years leading social media in high-growth or high-performance environments (preferably sport, entertainment, or lifestyle).
  • Proven track record using talent-first strategies to drive fan engagement.
  • Deep understanding of social platforms—especially TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Experience managing live event content (e.g., sports matchdays).
  • Strong editorial judgment and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in social media management tools
  • Ability to build relationships with athletes, agents, and high-profile stakeholders.
  • Background in professional sport (especially rugby).
  • Familiarity with athlete content strategies and IP/NIL (Name, Image, Likeness).
  • Creative production skills (e.g., TikToks, Reels, short-form video, storytelling).
  • Experience in paid social strategy and influencer campaigns
