Description:
Job purpose:
To ensure the organizations adherence to OHS legal requirements, to foster an positive Health and Safety culture amongst employees and to establish and maintain superior hygiene standards in the packhouse.
Operations
- Draft, review, and implement OHS and hygiene risk assessments, procedures, and work instructions.
- Identify and mitigate hazards as far as practically possible.
- Provide safety training (hazard ID, emergency plans, procedures, toolbox talks, inductions, etc.) to employees and subcontractors.
- Promote SHE culture through visible leadership, floor presence, awareness campaigns, and regular assessments.
- Conduct daily hygiene inspections in the packhouse and direct cleaners accordingly.
- Conduct regular checks and audits:
- Daily: hygiene walkabouts.
- Weekly: first aid stock checks, cleaning supply stock take, equipment condition inspections.
- Monthly: fire equipment checks, compliance inspections.
- Annually: OSHA audit, signage survey.
- Bi-annually: emergency drills, occupational hygiene surveys (noise, lighting, etc.).
- Manage PPE: stock taking, issuing, ordering, repairs, replacements, laundering.
- Maintain readiness for audits and inspections (e.g., MSHEQ, labour).
- Investigate and document incidents and accidents, report near misses and trend data (first aid use, incidents).
- Ensure corrective actions are implemented for non-conformances, follow up on SCAR reports.
- Chair monthly SHE meetings and review SHE Rep inspection findings.
- Maintain legal compliance: valid certifications (e.g., racking, fuel storage, electrical), legal appointments, servicing of fire equipment.
- Ensure contractor compliance: induction, documentation, certifications, monitoring on-site.
- Promote quality execution of tasks (e.g., maintenance, construction) through proper procedures and checks.
Quality
- Raise non-conformances clearly with relevant departments.
- Ensure corrective actions are validated and effective.
Compliance
- Conduct and assist with competency assessments.
- Review and update OHS/hygiene procedures and work instructions.
- Ensure full compliance with hygiene, health, and safety policies and maintain cleanliness in the packhouse.
Communication and Reporting
- Submit monthly SHE reports to management.
- Maintain strong communication at all levels to support efficient operations.
- Coordinate audits, track non-conformances, and report outcomes effectively.
Human Resources and Training
- Train reporting staff on procedures, standards, and regulatory requirements (internal and external).
- Conduct regular staff assessments and feedback sessions.
- Schedule refresher training as needed.
General and Off-Season
- Perform additional tasks as requested by management.
- Off-season responsibilities may differ based on operational needs.

- Experience In The Citrus/Agriculture/Food Processing Industry: 2 to 3 years
- Grade 12.
- National diploma in safety management/Risk management/SAMTRAC or relevant qualification and experience will be advantageous.
- Experience in the Citrus/Agriculture/Food processing industry will be advantageous.
- Computer skills (MS Office).

Qualifications and Education
- Grade 12.
