Head of Transmission & Distribution Engineering (HV/EHV)
Purpose of the Role
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to take on the role of Head of Transmission & Distribution Engineering for high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) infrastructure programs. This strategic position is responsible for leading multidisciplinary design teams across HV Primary Plant and Overhead Line Transmission systems, with a core focus on Engineering Balance of Plant (EBOP) projects within the renewables and energy infrastructure space.
You will shape the technical vision, expand engineering capacity, and drive excellence in project delivery, while ensuring alignment with safety, quality, and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering & Project Oversight
- Direct and manage the execution of HV EBOP projects from concept through construction support.
- Lead project planning, resourcing, delivery, and risk management processes.
- Maintain alignment across internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies.
- Leadership & Capability Building
- Grow and develop a high-performing engineering team, focusing on both senior and junior talent.
- Establish a culture of accountability, innovation, and technical excellence.
- Drive succession planning, mentorship, and ongoing technical development.
- Technical Excellence
- Oversee detailed design and engineering for HV infrastructure including integration with Solar PV, Wind, and Battery Storage systems.
- Ensure strict adherence to applicable codes, grid standards, and best practices.
- Review and sign off on major design packages and technical submissions.
- Stakeholder & Client Relations
- Act as the engineering lead in client-facing engagements, proposals, and reporting.
- Strengthen strategic partnerships and identify future project opportunities.
- Prepare and present project reports to executive and client leadership.
- Commercial & Financial Accountability
- Develop project budgets and resource plans to maximize delivery efficiency.
- Monitor financial performance and implement corrective actions as required.
- Contribute to business case development and margin optimization efforts.
- Quality, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure quality control, assurance, and compliance with statutory and environmental regulations.
- Lead the implementation of risk mitigation strategies across the design life cycle.
- Advocate for sustainable, forward-thinking design principles.
Candidate Profile
Qualifications & Experience
- ECSA-registered as Pr. Eng or Pr. Tech Eng.
- BEng / BSc / BTech in Electrical Engineering.
- Over 10 years’ experience in HV project delivery, including 3+ years in a technical leadership role.
- Deep exposure to the design and execution of transmission and renewable energy projects up to 765kV.
- Working knowledge of Southern African grid codes and utility engagement.
- EPC experience in transmission and distribution is an advantage.
