Hire Resolve's Client is seeking to hire a Commercial Underwriter to join their team. This role is responsible for the underwriting of commercial insurance business, which includes new policies, policy renewals, endorsements, quotations, and other related underwriting activities. The ideal candidate should have experience at an insurer or brokerage with binding authority, including making underwriting decisions on commercial risks, determining premium rates, initiating surveys where necessary, and adhering to established underwriting guidelines.
Scope of Commercial Business
Commercial underwriting encompasses insurance policies tailored for business entities, covering areas such as property, liability, business interruption, and other specialised risks. The role requires evaluating the exposure and insurance needs of various business types, from SMEs to large enterprises, ensuring the delivery of compliant and comprehensive coverage solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting and Policy Management
- Issue new policies, renewals, and endorsements using the C360 system
- Prepare and assess new business quotations
- Ensure underwriting practices align with company standards and procedures
- Support the sales team in acquiring and maintaining profitable business
- Perform accurate and timely administration and communication tasks
- Validate documentation and ensure proper authorisation prior to release
- Resolve underwriting queries in line with operational standards
- Negotiate and finalise renewal terms and documentation
- Conduct timely policy renewal reviews and calculate retentions
- Request and monitor risk surveys in accordance with procedures
- Amend unprofitable policies and assess exposure levels
- Review policies before client dispatch
- Handle client queries and amendments via telephone
- Maintain accurate electronic records of all activities
Customer Service Excellence
- Ensure service quality and outputs meet established operational and compliance benchmarks
- Handle escalated client queries and provide effective resolutions
- Implement structured routines aligned with operational targets
- Share expertise and assist in developing new procedures to enhance service standards
Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing

Qualifications and Experience
- Matric (Grade 12)
- NQF Level 5 in Short-Term Insurance
- Regulatory Exam Level 1 certification
- Minimum of five years of commercial underwriting experience
- Confirmation of Date of First Appointment (DOFA) from the Financial Sector Conduct Authority
- Proficiency in the Cardinal 360 system is advantageous
