Description:
PURPOSE OF ROLE
Provide technical expertise and engineering support to the site team by validating and ratifying the design baseline during construction activities. This position is primarily technical (90%) with some supervisory responsibilities (10%), ensuring that construction activities align with design specifications and quality standards.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Technical Support and Design Validation
- Evaluate and assess impact on design baseline during construction
- Provide technical advice regarding design baselines and engineering quality
- Conduct technical inspections to ensure construction complies with design specifications
- Report non-conforming work to the Construction Manager
- Review and validate technical outputs (ECM, Reports)
- Attend technical meetings with clients, contractors, and subcontractors
Project Implementation
- Ensure readiness of essential design drawings for construction and commissioning
- Communicate design baseline changes to the Project Engineer
- Apply contract requirements for effective decision-making when design impacts occur
- Monitor work environment for safety hazards due to design discrepancies
- Provide support during testing and commissioning phases
- Contribute to as-built documentation and punch list resolution
Technical Development
- Evaluate design baselines and conduct feasibility checks
- Develop or review technical specifications when required
- Review and compile variation orders and cost estimates
- Identify technical risks and develop work breakdown structures
- Adjudicate supplier offers and provide technical input to schedules
Process Compliance and Leadership
- Adhere to engineering procedures and project management principles
- Interface with various functional groups (Procurement, Finance, SHEQ)
- Mentor Engineering-in-Training (EIT) staff and junior engineers
- Promote and support company values
QUALIFICATION
- Bachelor's Degree in a Civil Engineering discipline from an accredited university
- Registration with ECSA or recognized international engineering body (preferred)
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 3 years of design experience in heavy and/or power industries
- At least 1 year of experience in the Energy Market (preferred)
- Previous construction site experience(required)
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS COMPETENCIES
Knowledge
- Technical competence within the specific engineering discipline
- Good understanding of relevant industries and their requirements
- Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and industry practices (ASME, SANS, API, BS, etc.)
- Excellent knowledge of company engineering procedures and processes
Skills
- Computer literacy (MS Office and relevant engineering software)
- Project management software proficiency (Primavera, MS Project)
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- High degree of analytical thinking
- Good leadership capabilities
- Strong administrative and organizational abilities
