Location: Wadeville, Germiston
POSITION PURPOSE:
- The incumbent will be responsible for the development of mechanical and integral piping, detail design and continuous product development of company products, specifically related to submerged arc furnace technology.
- This incumbent will also provide technical support to associated inter-company departments utilising computer assisted (CAD) design tools.
QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE
- Technical Certificate N4 or equivalent (enrolment in further studies will be preferable)
- SOLIDWORKS experience essential. Completion of a certified
- SOLIDWORKS and advanced modelling courses mandatory.
- Microsoft Office - Outlook, Excel and Word skills essential.
- Minimum of 8 years' experience in mechanical design and fabrication detailing.
- Specific experience in the DESIGN OF MECHANICAL PARTS & M-BOMS, ASSEMBLIES, PLATE WORK AND FABRICATION
Knowledge required:
- The principles of 2D and 3D Modelling.
- Strong working understanding of 3D Modelling environment from layout generation, part and assembly modelling, general arrangement drawing creation and part detailing.
- Reporting of mechanical design status on all assigned tasks.
- Working knowledge of mechanical equipment related to Drum Filters, Thickener Drive Gearboxes, Flotation Drives, Undercarriage Equipment, Final Proper Gearboxes
- Strong mathematical and communication skills.

- Responsible for preparing and presenting mechanical designs at design reviews and generating minutes from said review.
- Responsible for identifying mechanical part numbers in accordance with materials.
- Responsible for production of 2D drawings for manufacture.
- Responsible for generation of assembly drawings and bills of materials.
- Responsible for carrying out design change requests in a timely manner.
- Responsible for reporting progress of all assigned tasks to the engineering technology manager and project management teams.
- Responsible for checking drawing/parts list are up to date and correct.
- Responsible for checking and validating engineers' designs and drawings where required.
- Ensures design files and information are kept up to date and stored in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Ensures the mechanical design output complements all other aspects of the design.
- Works closely with operations, manufacturing and production engineers to ensure products are designed for successful manufacture.
- To take technical lead on specific projects and agree technical approach with the engineering manager.
- Take responsibility for coaching and supporting in all design techniques for junior staff.
- Identify personal or design team training requirement and recommend suitable courses to design head.
- Highlight all mechanical and technical risks to engineering manager.
- Keep up to date with the latest manufacturing techniques and drawing standards.
- Always available for onsite technical and customer support.
- Liaison with other company employees regularly to update design status.
- Produces designs to specified deadlines and achieves the required timescales.
- Any other ad hoc tasks assigned.
