A defence company in Centurion is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer. As a well-established international Defence-industry company, we are looking for an exceptional Junior Mechanical Designer to join our team specialising in the design and development of land-based defense systems. In this role, you will be responsible for designing innovative, high-performance mechanical systems and components that are critical to the success of military vehicles, armoured platforms, and other defense-related land systems.Responsibilities and duties will include:
- Technical Drawings: Produce detailed 2D and 3D drawings of vehicle components, assemblies, and systems based on design engineer specifications.
- CAD Modelling: Utilise CAD software (Autodesk Inventor) to create and modify technical drawings for both new designs and existing systems.
- Collaboration: Collaborate closely with Design Engineers to guarantee that drawings precisely represent design intent and fulfil the necessary technical and performance criteria.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate drawing records and ensure all technical documentation is updated.
- Revisions & Updates: Modify and refine drawings as necessary according to input from engineers, testing teams, and various other departments.
- Manufacturing Support: Support the manufacturing team by delivering precise and clear drawings that fulfil production and quality standards. Knowledge of manufacturing techniques including welding, machining, and sheet metal fabrication.
- Standards Compliance: Ensure all drawings adhere to industry standards, including military specifications, and comply with relevant regulatory requirements.
- Material Specifications: Support the design team by detailing materials, dimensions, and tolerances to ensure proper manufacturing and assembly of vehicle components.
- Team Support: Provide general assistance to Senior Draughtsmen and Design Engineers as needed during the design and development process.
- Project Management: Manage the design process from concept to production, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and technical requirements. Assist in project planning, resource allocation, and risk management.
Required Skills:
- Proficiency in CAD software (Autodesk Inventor is preferred).
- Understanding of vehicle mechanical systems and components.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering designs and schematics.
- High level of precision and accuracy in producing detailed drawings.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve design issues related to component fit, assembly, and manufacturing processes.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Engineers.
Experience:
- Technical knowledge
- Experience as a Designer in the armoured, defense or heavy machine industry (advantageous)
- BEng Mechanical Engineering Degree
- 85% Matric average
