REPORTING TO: SKIPPER
PURPOSE: Ensure a safe deck operation with good stock maintenance of all fishing gear. Monitor and
ensure a safe bridge watch.
OUTPUTS AND MEASUREMENTS:
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Ensure a safe and professional deck operation.
➢ Ensure all responsibilities are communicated to staff.
➢ Ensure all fishing gear is always safe and operational.
➢ Ensure all deck staff are always wearing relevant PPE.
➢ All deck activities whilst trawling and hauling are in accordance with the
applicable SOP.
➢ Operates basic function of the windlass which includes letting go and heaving
up an anchor.
• Ensure a safe and effective bridge watch and port watch.
➢ Bridge watches are kept in accordance to the Sea Harvest and SAMSA
regulations at all times.
➢ Accommodation and deck must be always kept clean whilst the vessel is
alongside.
➢ All duties to be carried out in accordance with the relevant SOP and strictly
according to company performance standards at all times.
• Ensure a good level of stock maintenance and fishing gear
➢ Ensure fishing gear is ordered in advance.
➢ Ensures all fishing gear is tallied on a regular basis and stowed safely at all
times.
➢ Ensure special fishing gear items are always in stock.
➢ Ensure fishing gear requiring repair is done either onboard or ashore.
➢ Responsible for the ship's anchors, cordage, deck crew and the ship's boats
while on board.
REQUIRMENTS AND COMPETENCIES:
➢ Has wide knowledge in the use of knots, hitches, bends, whipping, and
splicing.
➢ Good verbal communication skills
➢ Ability to teach, mentor and motivate.
➢ Positive attitude and problem solving.
